Engagement and Enrichment

Community Building

In cooperation with the Office of Student Affairs and the Office of the Learning Environment, the Office of Student Engagement and Enrichment welcomes MS1 students to campus with activities during student orientation, and even before the start of classes with the Prologue to Medicine program (details below). We support students’ work on Pitt Med’s new tradition of having each incoming class write its own Oath of Professionalism, and kick off the school year with Culture Fest, a celebration of the various cultures of the School of Medicine community featuring food, music, art and games. OSEE also provides a supportive environment for students with events including receptions for nontraditional students during orientation, free Thanksgiving meals for students staying on campus over break and drop-in mentoring sessions for students.

Connecting Students With Resources, Programs and Opportunities to Support Their Success:

Student Resource Groups

The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine offers more than 70 student organizations, including student interest and resource groups. Our office provides administrative and financial support to 13 student resource groups, each open to all students. To join or start a group, please contact us.

Joan Harvey, MD, Emergency Fund

The Emergency Fund is designed to provide temporary, short-term financial assistance to medical school students who are confronted with unanticipated or emergency financial situations.

Prologue to Medicine

Prologue to Medicine is a dynamic five-week summer program designed to welcome and prepare first-year medical students. Students are introduced to the Three Rivers Curriculum (3RC), meet their faculty and instructors, connect with classmates and explore the city of Pittsburgh through social activities. The program runs from June through the first week of July, and is open to all incoming medical students. Contact Anna Elias, are60@pitt.edu, to learn more!

Jeannette E. South-Paul Visiting Clerkship (JSPVC)

The JSPVC program welcomes visiting students to UPMC and supports their progressional growth through mentorship and financial assistance. Each participant is paired with a department mentor and receives funding to remove financial barriers to learning and exploration. Our goal is to inspire future residency and fellowship trainees to continue their journey with UPMC. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. All students are encouraged to apply. Please contact Anna Elias are60@pitt.edu with any questions.
